Townsville Tropical North Queensland Australia
Reef - Rainforest - Outback - 320 Days of sunshine

The traditional capital of North Queensland
Townsville is located in the dry tropics midway between Cairns & the Whitsunday Islands.

Dominated by the back drop of rugged Castle Hill, framed by Cleveland Bay and the Magnificent Strand
beach front recreation area, with the ever present majestic Magnetic Island a stones throw across the bay,
Townsville is a picturesque city with a lot to offer.
It has a great variety of attractions both natural and man made and with a population of some 165,000
there are lots of "city things". Pubs, clubs, restaurants, recreational areas, parks & gardens etc, but it
also sits in a unique position, providing an ideal climate for travellers.
Townsville's position allows a wide variety of experiences to be enjoyed;
- A trip to the outer barrier reef
one day. This is an experience not to be missed.
- Prepare for your day on the reef, or if a reef trip is not possible
then simply enjoy the next best thing, with a visit to Reef HQ
the world's largest living coral aquarium.
- A great way to tour Townsville with
Tropicana Guided Adventures in their stretched jeep. This a fun way to discover the rich history,
tropical culture and lifestyle of beautiful Townsville while taking in the panoramic views from iconic
Castle Hill, the cosmopolitan atmosphere of Palmer Street the Strand beach front and water park, along with the
diversity of Australia's largest tropical city.
- Perhaps a more traditional city sights tour, or an eco tour of the Highlands tunnels,
the delight of a tour to the rainforests of Paluma via the sugar cane region, the wonder of Wallaman Falls
or a day tour of Charters Towers all available through
Kookaburra Tours
- Magnetic Island another day.
Just 20minutes by ferry across the bay with stunning scenery, picturesque bays and beaches, it's a great day out.
- Catch a barra, tour the fish farm, enjoy the redclaw races, hit off on the
driving range, play aqua golf or simply relax at the BBQ and picnic area at
Townsville's Barra Fishing Farm
- Scuba dive on the ship wreck SS Yongala
one of the world's best diving experiences. Resting on the ocean floor the wreck begins 14m below
the surface and extends down to 28m providing a very active home for marine structures, attracting turtles,
sea snakes, giant trevally, gropers, eagle rays, manta rays, sharks and thousands of fish to create
unforgettable memories.
- Visit Charters Towers
for an outback experience on another day.
- Or if you prefer to get involved then join the cattle muster for
a great but very different day out
- Visit Billabong Sanctuary for a
hands on experience with the animals of North Queensland.
- The Museum of Tropical Queensland
home to the Pandora shipwreck display is another must see item.
- Take a drive to the top of Castle Hill with it's
stunning panoramic views.
- Enjoy the Strand
beachfront the locals love it and we are sure you will to!!
- With national parks including the world heritage area of Paluma
the Townsville region has a range of natural attractions.
- Perhaps some adventure with a tandem sky dive.
- The theatre with a performance by local company
Tropic Sun theatre.
- For visual entertainment and the wonder of human movement a night with local
company Dance North is a must. One of Australia's outstanding arts organisation
the company regularly dances on the world stage show casing it's vibrant style.
- Explore the area surrounding the Summit Motel. One of the first settled areas of the city, it has retained much
of it's history and is home to many grand Queenslander residences. Similarly throughout the
city there are many fine examples of early architecture.
- And of course there are all the normal things a city with a population of some 160,000 people would have, including the Cotters Markets
held in Flinders Mall every Sunday, sporting events, theatre, golf, bowling, night clubs, cafe's, restaurants, pubs, clubs, museums, art galleries,
general entertainment and festivals including the world renowned Australian Festival of Chamber Music held over a two week period in July each year.
